Wow...

It's been so long since I've posted to Livejournal that I forgot how to post. However, Facebook works better for most things that I want to do with my social networking, like posting pictures of my miniatures. What a shame. :(

I was reading this recently:

"She's gettin' into that fertile part of life for plans and adventures."

Gender discrepancy aside, was I supposed to have done that? Had that phase in my life? I don't remember going through it...

Lovecraft had the first wiki...

  • Jan. 8th, 2010 at 12:16 AM
I was talking with some friends of mine recently about why Lovecraft was so popular in role-playing, while guys like Clive Barker and Stephen King have yet to have RPGs written about their works.

The reason is because Lovecraft created, in a sense, the first wiki. He laid out a rough framework for a world, then allowed other people to contribute - in other words, let them make modifications to his original design. He was a clumsy writer, but the strength of his vision allowed other people to modify it to their own ends. It could be argued that his lack of writing skill also lowered the bar for other writers; writing a King pastiche is incredibly difficult, while writing a Lovecraft pastiche requires a simple formula and some stock phrases.

Regarding Games Workshop stores...

  • Dec. 31st, 2009 at 11:56 AM
I dropped by one in Houston not too long ago, because I was curious to see what they were like.

If you've ever wanted to see a human being hollowed out and used as a glove puppet to sell corporate merchandise, walk into any GW store and have a conversation with the guy working. You won't be talking to an actual human being, but a skinsuit running a script designed to gouge you out of your cash.

Like, I was thinking about developing a Tyranid army; now I'm wondering if that's such a good idea after all.

Another revelation...

I really, really need to get the fuck out of Louisiana. It's like being buried alive with more baseball hats and shitball mustaches.

First, I had some kind of Halloween theme, involving a dead tree and, I think, a raven sitting in it.

I really like dark, spooky stuff. I would love to write an extended essay about why I love the dark, spooky stuff, but the problem is that a lot of what used to be dark and spooky is now being sold by the pound at Hot Topic.

A conclusion that I have reached...

I need to get the hell out of Louisiana.

I dream pretty fucking weird...

  • Aug. 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 AM
People often complain about the weird dreams that they have. I listen to their descriptions and think "Man, that is fucking tame compared to my weird dreams."

To wit: Last night, I had a dream in which I was wandering around in a mall, and happened upon a gourmet chocolate shop. I was looking forward to getting some chocolate when I noticed that some guys in the back were ladling huge mounds of chunky peanut butter into a hollow, orange M&M shell approximately the size of a mailbox. I somehow determined that contained within the M&M - and this was the feature of the candy, not a drawback or a terrible accident - was the dead body of a Latin American revolutionary whose body would provide some rich guy with peanut-butter-flavored cannibalism. Later, after some equally baffling imagery, it was determined that the revolutionary in question had been pulverized into "chunks no bigger than 200mm", so that you wouldn't have to eat the guy all at once. This was also apparently a feature of the candy in question.

After that, I had a more prosaic dream about the idea that I had signed up for a class in weaving when I was in college, had forgotten all about it, and was now about to fail because I had been blowing it off the entire semester in favor of concentrating on the difficulties of classes more important to my major.

Telling people about your dreams is pretty lame, 'cause there's nowhere really to go with them, but, like, damn.

On raiding Scholomance...

  • Jul. 27th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
Tonight, when I get home, I am going to sit down at my computer, and I'm going to boot up World of Warcraft. I'm going to log into the game, and then take Illyrian - my 80 rogue - through Scholomance. And I'm going to go slaughter every thing in that place with Fan of Knives. And then I'm going to loot the bodies. And then I'm going to take that money and go get Epic Flying.

I have my evening planned out.

Sure, I could wait until 3.2 drops to save the money on Epic Flying, but man, I've heard October as the soonest that's going to happen. And I ain't gonna wait.
